Following our first journey in 2026, we are delighted to offer our Royal Highland Festival adventure for a second time in 2027. Along the way, you’ll also discover some of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks and cultural treasures. From the spectacular Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched high on a cliffside, to the magnificent Buddha Dordenma overlooking Thimphu, every stop offers a glimpse into the kingdom’s rich history and spiritual heritage. We’ll cross the breathtaking Dochula Pass, with its 108 memorial chortens and panoramic Himalayan views, and visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most beautiful and historically significant monasteries and fortresses.

Our destination is the legendary Royal Highland Festival, held in the mountain village of Laya at approximately 4,000 metres above sea level. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, you’ll discover the fascinating culture of the Layap people, meet local yak herders, enjoy traditional music and dances, and experience a way of life that has remained deeply connected to the mountains for generations.

And for those who enjoy a sporting challenge, there’s the famous Laya Run! This spectacular 25 km mountain race is an integral part of the festival’s opening day. Starting in Ponjothang, the route follows the beautiful Mo Chhu River before climbing towards Laya, where runners finish amid the excitement and celebrations of the festival. With its challenging terrain, high altitude, and stunning scenery, it’s an adventure in its own right.

Of course, you don’t have to run to enjoy this journey. Whether you take on the Laya Run or simply immerse yourself in the festival, you’ll experience Bhutan far beyond the usual tourist routes.
